Golden Palm: Cristian Mungiu

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu wins the Golden Palm for his movie "4 months, three weeks and two days", a film about a young woman seeking an illegal abortion during Romania's Communist rule.

Other awards include:

  • Konstantin Lavronenko - Best Actor
  • La forêt de Mogari - Grand Prix
  • De l'autre côté - Prix du scénario
  • "Persépolis" and "Lumière silencieuse" - Jury Prize
  • Julian Schnabel - Best Director
Overall, a big year in Cannes for Romanian film: The first prize in the "Un Certain Regard" section was awarded to"California Dreamin" from Romania, the last film shown in the competition. The jury had originally not intended to judge the film, but spontaneously changed their mind after the screening. The movie's director Cristian Nemescu was tragically killed in 2006 in a car accident at age 27.
